It turned out that the “abs class” was a 45 minute Pilates Mat class. I continued my classes that were scheduled every Saturday at 9am. Shortly after I found out I was 6 weeks pregnant. I continued my spinning classes once a week but changed to Pilates “private” classes on the apparatus’. I didn’t know at the time what my pelvic floor muscles were, but I read somewhere that these were the muscles you need during child birth. ![]() The Pilates private sessions were customized for me and the baby, and I was given all the attention I needed. The classes helped me strengthen my core muscles, lower back muscles and pelvic floor muscles. I had a very healthy pregnancy. I was also noticing that the classes helped me release a lot of the stress I was under from my job as an IT manager. In fact, co-workers would joke with me about how I was in a great mood on Tuesday and Thursday mornings. I also noticed a shift in my moods and a deeper connection with my body. Back then I had a very stressful lifestyle. I was working 60 hour weeks, had a poor diet and sleepless nights. During one of my Pilates private sessions, my teacher then, and now a very dear friend, noticed that I was getting very connected with my body and suggested I consider signing up for a teacher training mat course. The course was scheduled 2 months after the baby’s due date. I remember being six weeks post partum on the mat learning how to teach each Pilates exercise. I continued my Pilates practice on the equipment in a group class, and approximately a year later I took another Pilates course to learn how to teach on the Pilates apparatus’. With a baby girl, I knew my life style needed a change. I wanted to be a better mom and wanted to spend those extra hours with my family instead of at the office. With the suggestion and support of my loving husband, I put all my efforts into what is today Forrest Pilates. This lifestyle change allowed me the flexible hours I needed so I could spend more time with my daughter. For some time I juggled my job, the new baby, and Pilates clients on week nights and weekends until I built enough business to leave the corporate world. I love being a teacher and I am passionate about Pilates. Pilates allows me to help people feel good about their bodies and themselves. I make it a point to give my clients what I call “The Pilates Experience.” A 1-hour get-away from the crazy fast paced world we live in to connect with our bodies, mind and spirit, and enjoy life to it’s fullest. This is what I’m most proud of... to be able to make a difference in peoples life. Maria Forrest
